Definition
Return on equity (ROE) roughly asks: how much profit did the company earn relative to shareholders’ equity? It is a profitability study ratio - not a guarantee of future returns.
When this looks weak or down
Often drops when profit falls while equity stays large, or when the company raised equity without earning more yet. High debt can also distort ROE.
Purpose & when you need it
Purpose
ROE exists to study how much accounting profit was earned on the equity base - a structure check, not a forecast.
When you need it
Need stored PAT and equity for the same story period. Thin books → leave ROE empty rather than invent it.
Where it appears & why people look
Where
Ratio rows and Books health context when equity and profit lines are stored.
Why people look
People look at ROE when comparing how efficiently a company used equity capital versus peers. Banks and industrials can look very different - compare within a sector first.
Formula (simple)
ROE ≈ net profit ÷ shareholders’ equity (for a comparable period). Definitions vary (average equity vs period-end). Always read the filing period on the desk.
Traps (tip culture)
High ROE from thin equity or one-off gains can mislead. Leverage can inflate ROE. Tip forwards that only show “ROE 40%” without the period or equity base are incomplete homework.
On our desk
When Books are ready, equity and profit lines support ROE study. If books are thin, use Filings on this desk - we do not invent ROE.

FAQ
Does high ROE mean I should buy the stock?
No. ROE is for study. High ROE can come from leverage or one-offs. Open the share-price page and filings before any decision with a licensed broker.
Why compare ROE inside one sector?
Capital structure and accounting styles differ. A bank ROE is not the same homework as a cement plant ROE.
What if equity is thin or negative?
Treat ROE with extra care - or skip it. Thin equity can inflate the ratio. Read the SOFP notes on Filings.
