Definition

Bollinger bands draw a moving average and a corridor based on how jumpy recent closes were. Upper/lower mean “far from typical,” not magic support/resistance.

When this looks weak or down

Price near the lower band means it sits low vs its own recent volatility - not an automatic bargain. Check Books.

Purpose & when you need it

Purpose

Bands show whether today’s print is ordinary or stretched versus recent volatility.

When you need it

Need enough closes for average and volatility. Missing history → empty bands.

Why people look

Tips love “touching the upper band.” The desk shows the three levels so you can check the claim.

Formula (simple)

Middle ≈ SMA (or similar). Upper/lower ≈ middle ± k × standard deviation of closes in the window. Parameters vary by desk.

Traps (tip culture)

Touching a band is common in a lively name - not a sell or buy order. “Squeeze” stories still need books and filings.

FAQ

Is touching the upper band a sell?

No. It means price is stretched vs recent volatility - still homework, not an order.

What is a squeeze?

When bands sit close together, recent volatility was low. That is a description, not a tip.

Do bands know earnings?

No. They only use recent closes.
