Definition

Operating cash flow (OCF) is cash generated (or used) by the company’s core operations in a period - from the cash-flow statement, not the same as net profit.

When this looks weak or down

Can lag profit when customers pay late, inventory builds, or tax timing shifts. Profit up but cash down is a classic homework flag.

Purpose & when you need it

Purpose

OCF exists to show whether core operations produced or used cash - separate from accounting profit.

When you need it

Use when a cash-flow period is stored. If only P&L exists, do not invent OCF.

Where it appears & why people look

Where

Books → Cash flow → Operating CF. Annual table OCF column when parsed.

Why people look

Profit can include non-cash items. People look at OCF to ask whether operations are actually producing cash.

Formula (simple)

OCF is reported on the cash-flow statement (methods vary: direct vs indirect). Compare OCF to net profit to study cash conversion - carefully, with the same period.

Traps (tip culture)

Positive PAT with negative OCF (or the reverse) needs homework, not a tip-group slogan. One period of OCF does not prove a “safe” stock.

On our desk

Cash-flow lines appear when we have stored a cash-flow parse. Thin books → Filings on this desk. We never invent OCF.

FAQ

Where do I see operating cash flow for a PSX company?

Open a share-price research page (for example /psx/research/ogdc) and check Books when cash flow is stored. Otherwise use Filings on that desk.

Is OCF the same as free cash flow?

No. FCF usually subtracts capital spending ideas from OCF. Definitions vary - read the period notes.

What if PAT is up but OCF is down?

That is a homework flag, not a tip. Check working capital, one-offs, and the cash-flow notes.
