Definition

Revenue (also called sales or turnover) is the top line of the income statement - money reported from selling goods or services before direct costs, operating expenses, interest, and tax.

When this looks weak or down

Sales can fall when volumes drop, prices are cut, a big contract ends, or the economy slows. Check the filing notes - not every dip is permanent.

Purpose & when you need it

Purpose

Revenue shows the scale of business activity in a period - the starting point before asking what costs and profit were left.

When you need it

Use it when a P&L period is stored with a revenue or sales line. Compare the same period label across years.

Where it appears & why people look

Where

Books → Income on the company research page and annual books tables when P&L is stored.

Why people look

People study revenue to see whether the business grew or shrank in reported sales, and to set context for gross profit and net profit below it.

Formula (simple)

Revenue is reported on the P&L for a fiscal period. It is not the same as cash received - accrual accounting can differ from when customers pay.

Traps (tip culture)

Tip groups often show “sales doubled” without the period, sector, or one-off contracts. One strong revenue quarter is homework, not a buy signal. Banks may label interest income differently - read the sector filing style.

On our desk

Revenue appears in Books trend charts and income tables when stored. If P&L is missing, we show an honest empty - we never invent sales.

FAQ

Is revenue the same as profit?

No. Revenue is the top line. Profit lines (gross, operating, net) come after costs, expenses, interest, and tax.

Is revenue the same as cash in the bank?

Not always. Revenue follows accounting rules for when sales are recognised. Cash may arrive earlier or later.

Why compare revenue year over year?

To see reported business scale change - always with the same fiscal period and after reading notes for one-offs.
